Pedal the Cause

A few weeks after our daughter Elizabeth was born in April of 1999, we received a beautiful handmade blanket from Karen and Jim Shaughnessy. We barely knew Karen and Jim, but they were friends of my sister, and they heard of our struggle to have a child. They too were trying to start a family and had their own challenges. Their journey ultimately led them to twin boys as they began to build the family they had dreamed of.

 While the blanket was a small gesture, I have never forgotten the thoughtfulness that came from two people I barely knew. It was a kind and simple act that meant a lot to me.

 It has been over 27 years since that time, and now I need to give back to Karen and Jim.

Unfortunately, several days ago, at age 57, Karen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. One day, life is moving along as it always has and suddenly everything changes—for Karen, for Jim, for their children, and for everyone who loves them.

Their journey is just beginning. Karen has turned to Siteman Cancer Center, where she and Jim are seeking answers, assembling the best possible medical team, and preparing for the fight ahead. There will undoubtedly be difficult days. There will be uncertainty and fear. But there will also be hope. And hope is exactly why I am writing to you.

This year, I am riding in honor of Karen Shaughnessy. Additionally, I will ride for Jim and their children. I will ride for every family that has sat in a doctor’s office and heard the words no family ever wants to hear.

Most of us have a cancer story. We know the heartbreak it can bring. But we have also seen what research, extraordinary doctors, new treatments, determination, faith, and love, can accomplish. That is why I am asking for your help. Please consider making a contribution to my Pedal The Cause fundraising effort in honor of Karen Shaughnessy, in whatever amount that is meaningful to you.
