In Loving Memory of Patricia Bergstrand Jinkins

Patricia Bergstrand Jinkins

November 15, 1935 – April 25, 2026

Patricia Bergstrand Jinkins, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 90 on April 25, 2026, on Hilton Head Island, surrounded by her husband and both children.

She is survived by her husband, Roger. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this June. She is also survived by her daughter Susan (Andy) Hughson, and their son Tommy; and her son David (Anna) Jinkins, with their sons Roger and William.

Born on November 15, 1935, to Milton and Jettie (Oien) Bergstrand, Pat was the middle daughter between Betty and Nancy. They grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. For many years, the three girls and eventually their families would gather in Green Bay for the Packer games, Christmas, and summer vacations.

After graduating from Beloit College, Pat became a research chemist at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, where she was part of the team that isolated the FBJ osteosarcoma virus, a discovery that bears her name to this day. Their work laid groundwork that cancer researchers have built upon for more than six decades.

Pat and Roger met while she was working at Argonne and he was attending medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago.  After marrying, they raised their two children in Chicago, Minneapolis, Freeport IL, Harlingen TX, and eventually South Carolina.  In their later years, Pat and Roger made their home on Hilton Head Island, where they lived for over 25 years.

Pat loved her family and friends, but she also loved ice cream and gummy bears, golf, and the opportunity to serve her community and help others. She delighted in finding a penny on the ground or a golf ball in a lagoon. She touched so many lives in big and small ways.
