For my Brothers and Others

Cancer is a bitch and I'm sick of it hitting my family. I'm doing what I can to honor those who've fought it and to try to lessen the impact for other families.

On his birthday, April 23, 2025, I'm founding a Pedal the Cause team in honor of my oldest brother, John "Flip" Engle, who we lost to pancreatic cancer. We're calling it the FlipForce.

Many years ago, Flip taught me to ride my bicycle and this seems like a good way to recognize that epic "big brother" gift he gave me, plus all of the things he's done for me in my life. I salute his strength in his struggle with this disease and have committed to ride the full 100-mile "River Bluffs Century" across and around the rivers that meant so much to him.

He's the latest in a list of other friends and family who cancer has affected and I'm riding for them all:

  • My Mom, Pat (Throat Cancer)
  • My Dad, Phil (Lung Cancer)
  • My Father in Law, Bob (Pancreatic Cancer)
  • My Aunt Dixie, (Breast Cancer)
  • My Aunt Joan, (Lung Cancer)
  • My Brother Rodney (Skin Cancer survivor)
  • My Aunt Ruth (Skin Cancer survivor)
  • My Uncle Don (Prostate Cancer survivor)
  • My Cousin Jeff (Colorectal & Throat Cancer survivor)
  • Many others who I regrettably have forgotten or did not know about

I'm recruiting other friends and family to join me on this journey to support however they can. Ride, donate, pray, or all of the above.

Check Donations- Please make the check payable to Pedal the Cause and mail the check to CIBC c/o Pedal the Cause 8410 Solutions Center Chicago, IL 60677-8004 with the fundraiser name in the memo line.

Stock donations and Donor-Advised Fund- When processing a DAF grant through a charitable giving account, search for the Pedal the Cause by tax ID (27-2233336). In the “notes” section, indicate the Pedal the Cause fundraiser you want to support.

*Once the check is received Pedal the Cause will post the check to your profile. Please note it typically takes 10-14 days to post.
