This is my 11th year riding with Pedal the Cause, and I’m proud to continue the fight against cancer alongside this incredible organization. Pedal the Cause is more than an event — it’s a movement, a celebration of hope, and a community fueled by the determination to end cancer.
I first fell in love with Pedal the Cause because of Walter Bass. Walter was the heart and soul of our Illumina PTC team, and we miss him terribly. On every training ride, he reminded me, “It’s a ride, not a race.” His spirit continues to inspire me every time I get on my bike.
Today, I ride for so many incredible people, including Kate Colton, Laura Smith, and Tom Vibert, who are courageously battling cancer right now. As Tom says, “GET IN CANCER’S FACE!” Tom is an inspiration to all of us. He already beat cancer once, and I know he will do it again.
Like so many families, ours has been deeply affected by cancer. I lost my dad to lung cancer 15 years ago, but I’m grateful that my mom won her battle with breast cancer 25 years ago. I ride for those who can’t, for survivors like Julia McDougel, LaMalva Keithly, Anne Koth, Karen Altes, and Mary Fulbright, and in memory of friends we’ve lost, including Marla Miller and Andrea Dressel.
