Hudson Van Roekel was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Anaplastic Ependymoma in November 2019, at just two years old. Over the next five and a half years, he bravely endured numerous surgeries, multiple rounds of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and many other intensive treatments. On April 26, 2026, Hudson passed away peacefully, following a courageous and inspiring battle with brain cancer.
Hudson was a proud first grader at Ostmann Elementary School. Although his time there was often interrupted by his illness, he cherished his friends, teachers, and classmates alike. To know Hudson was to know pure joy and boundless compassion. He never met a stranger, and his love for others always outshone any hardship he faced. Even amid his own battles, Hudson’s heart remained focused on the well-being of those around him and getting well so that he could be with them.
He was a true inspiration — a fighter, a warrior — yet he carried his burdens without complaint, showing bravery and grace far beyond his years. Hudson’s tight hugs, infectious laughter, and gentle soul were gifts he shared freely with the world. His laughter echoed like music and his hugs could make even the darkest days a little brighter.
Throughout his life, Hudson knew only how to be a courageous, patient soul. He adored all of his doctors and nurses at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital, looking forward to each visit with a bravery that amazed everyone who loved him. No treatment or surgery could ever dim his spirit.
Hudson’s life, though far too short, was filled with extraordinary joy and kindness. He taught us what it means to be brave, selfless, and full of love. We are better for having known him, and we will carry his beautiful spirit with us forever.
